Having a stroke is a highly stressful and often demoralising experience yet some reports indicate that poor treatment of stroke victims is still commonplace in some NHS hospitals. This is likely to compel more and more people to seek out private health insurance, and ensure they have access to high calibre treatment carried out in superior facilities. According to a BBC report, inefficiencies in the standard of care for stroke victims have led to thousands of stroke sufferers experiencing disability or dying unnecessarily. This is leading many people to contact private health insurance providers to discover the benefits of private health cover and find a policy that suits their lifestyle. Strokes are one of the most common heart conditions affecting the lives of UK residents and many who are concerned about the standard of treatment for stroke sufferers are likely to seek out private health insurance policies to ensure they are adequately covered.

Private health insurance – a numbers game

According to the Stroke Association, there are approximately 100,000 strokes suffered in the UK each year. In England alone, these result in the deaths of over 32,000 people annually. Research suggests that the standard of care provided to stroke victims may be partly responsible for unnecessary deaths. Concerns are driving many people to set up private health insurance for themselves and their families, and ensure that, if they do become ill, they receive the best possible medical care. According to some analysts, the problem lies largely in the fact that less than two-thirds of patients are treated in a dedicated stroke ward and this compromises the quality  of their care. With this in mind, concern is growing amongst the general public about the standard of care that they’ll receive if they don’t have health cover and the number of people seeking out private health insurance is set to increase in the coming years.

Private health insurance – ignoring guidelines

According to a report on the BBC, part of the problem regarding the treatment of stroke victims is the fact that vital guidelines regarding the condition are often being ignored. Speaking to the BBC, Joe Korner of the Stroke Association, states, “Too often in the past, vital stroke guidelines such as these have been put on a shelf and ignored, causing unnecessary deaths, disability and loss of independence for many thousands of people.” Private health insurance is likely to experience an upsurge in policy requests as people strive to ensure they receive the best possible treatment in the event of a stroke.
