NHS waiting. Panorama investigates

The number of people waiting for hospital treatment in England has hit a record high of 5.61 million, the NHS is struggling to clear the growing backlog of cases caused by Covid-19. The BBC’s panorama with Victoria Derbyshire showed us some of the real-life stories behind some of those numbers. Hospital waiting lists in England at longest since records began

With a funding squeeze on the NHS since 2010 and increasing staffing shortages the NHS was already under significant pressure before the pandemic hit.

It is more than four years since the 18-week referral-to-treatment standard for planned care was last met, more than five years since the national four-hour A&E standard was met and more than six years since the 62-day cancer treatment standard was met. (Not been met nationally since 2013/14.)
